Your Contact Lens Prescription (Rx) contains information to ensure that the contact lenses you wear are safe, comfortable, and will provide optimal vision. Read below to better understand the abbreviations and terms used by your optometrist.


How do I read my Contact Lens Prescription?

Note: A regular eyeglasses prescription is NOT the same as a contact lenses prescription



General Options:

- OS:

Left Eye
Oculus Sinister (Latin)

- OD:Right Eye
Oculus Dextrus (Latin)

- Brand Name:

Brand of Lens (eg. Acuvue, FreshLook, Focus, etc.)

- SPH or PWR:Sphere (or Power)
(+) Farsightedness or Hyperopia, (-) Nearsightedness or Myopia
Range from +20.00 to -20.00

- BC:Base Curve: The curve of the contact lenses
Range from 8.0 to 10.0
Usually same for both eyes

- DIA:Diameter: The diameter of the contact lenses
Range from 13.0 to 15.0
Usually same for both eyes

Options for Astigmatism/ Toric Wearers:

- CYL:

Cylinder
Range from -4.00 to +4.00

- AXIS:

Axis
Range from 10' to 180'
Given in Degrees


Option for Bifocal/ Multi-focal Wearers:

- ADD:

Add Power for magnification
1 to 4, or High, Med, Low
